On November 21, 2016, the Department of English and the Georgetown University India Initiative hosted a film screening of SAमीR (The Perception), directed by Dakxinkuman Bajrange Chandra. This action film explores the themes of state-perpetrated violence, media-fueled stereotypes, and the brutality of politics. The Perception follows the life of a young and innocent Muslim engineering student who is taken into custody by the Indian Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). He is then forced to help the ATS in their mission to find the mastermind behind a series of bombings in Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
The screening was followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Dakxinkuman Bajrange Chandra, an award-winning filmmaker, playwright, director, and activist from the Chhara de-notified tribes of Ahmedabad in the western region of India.
This event was hosted by the Department of English and sponsored by an India Initiative seed grant.
Dakxinkuman Bajrange Chandra is a winning filmmaker, playwright, director, and activist currently working as an artistic director at Budhan Theatre, a community theater group of the Chhara de-notified tribe of Gujarat.
