Raj Desai is a professor of international development in the Asian Studies Program in the School of Foreign Service and the Department of Government in the College of Arts & Sciences. He joined the Georgetown faculty in 1999.

International activities include:

  • Works as a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and an affiliated researcher at the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics.
  • Co-authored After the Spring: Economic Transitions in the Arab World (2012) and The World Bank's World Development Report: A Better Investment Climate for Everyone (2005) and coedited Can Russia Compete? (2008) and Between State and Market: Mass Privatization in Transition Economies (1997).
  • Contributed to the efforts to privatize and restructure public enterprises in post-Soviet Eastern Europe while working at the World Bank.
  • Served as occasional consultant to the World Bank Group, the Asian Development Bank, the UNDP, and other international organizations.
  • Published over 20 articles in journals and books on international development and political economy.
