On August 25-26, 2017, Georgetown's Institute for Soft Matter (I(SM)2) and the India Initiative hosted a two-day workshop on a diverse range of soft matter subjects. The workshop was attended by six professors from the Indian Institute of Science in Bengalaru, India, three scientists from the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and nearly 30 professors, post-doctoral students, and graduate students from the I(SM)2 program.
Each of the professors presented aspects of their research and the graduate students and postdocs contributed 12 posters for discussion. The conversations were animated and reflected the interest of all participants in learning about the work of different communities (both scientific and geographic) on this topic. The workshop convened a diverse set of participants. In addition to the visiting scientists and researchers, Georgetown welcomed special guests Paulina Pavez, a guest professor from Universidad Catolica in Santiago, Chile; Edvaldo Sabadini, a guest professor from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas in Campinas, Brazil; Dr. Irfan Nooruddin, director of the Georgetown University India Initiative; and Pratik Mathur, first secretary of the Press, Information, and Culture wing of the Embassy of India.
After a lively discussion at the end of the workshop, the participants decided to explore avenues for student exchanges between the two institutions with aspirations for faculty exchanges in the future.
