At this event, which is part of the Development of India: Economics, Fiction, and Film Series, Professor Shareen Joshi held a screening Monsoon Wedding, a comedy focused on the theme of arranged marriages in India. The film won the Golden Lion Award and a Golden Globe Award nomination in 2001.

Monsoon Wedding is centered around the organization of a chaotic, enormous, and expensive Punjabi Hindu wedding in Delhi. The protagonists, Aditi Verma and Hemant Rai, have only known each other for a few weeks before they are to be married, and as so often happens in Indian culture, a wedding of this magnitude convenes both extended families from all corners of the globe, inviting an extraordinary amount of drama.

This event is co-sponsored the Georgetown University India Initiative, the Walsh School of Foreign Service, and the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship.

Shareen Joshi is an assistant professor in the Walsh School of Foreign Service and a member of the India Initiative faculty committee.
