The 2019 Indian general elections and the United States midterms, electoral competition and the structure of democratic systems are important to both academic and popular discourse. An expert on Indian politics, Pradeep Chhibber spoke about his research on India's political parties, electoral system, and the influence of religion and identity on political action in India.

This event, co-sponsored by the India Initiative, was part of the Current Research on Issues and Topics in Comparative Scholarship (CRITICS) series sponsored by the Department of Government and the Mortara Center for International Studies.

Pradeep Chhibber is a professor, the Indo-American Community Chair in India Studies, and director of the Institute of International Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of the recent book Ideology and Identity: The Changing Party System of India. His recent research is on the influence of ideology on party system change, religion and politics, elections, and the politics of development in India.
